Food Systems

More resilient and inclusive food systems are essential for strengthening food security, improving livelihoods, and supporting environmental sustainability.

Our Approach to Food Systems

Food systems are the networks of actors, activities, and institutions involved in producing, processing, distributing, and consuming food. They shape how food is cultivated, traded, and accessed, while also influencing livelihoods, health, environmental sustainability, and economic development. Across Africa, food systems are under increasing pressure from climate change, population growth, changing diets, and economic transformation. Strengthening food systems is therefore essential to ensuring food security, supporting decent livelihoods, and building resilient communities.

At INCLUDE, we explore how food systems can become more climate-resilient while also creating opportunities for those who are often left behind, particularly young people and women. Our work focuses on understanding the power dynamics and policy choices that shape just food systems transitions, with the aim of improving livelihoods, food sovereignty, and environmental sustainability.
