Policy highlights:
- Global youth unemployment rates are on the rise, posing a serious problem for sustainable poverty reduction. In developing countries this problem is further exacerbated by extremely low wages, making multiple jobs necessary. Wide gender disparities create additional obstacles for young females, hampering general economic growth.
- To address these issues, governments should: 1) guarantee better access to education for youth; 2) increase productive opportunities for females; and 3) formulate a comprehensive policy framework that includes adequate social protection, economic security and equal opportunities.
