In a landmark step toward building a future-ready green workforce, Nigeria has completed the first phase of developing an enhanced solar energy curriculum for its Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) system.

Spearheaded by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) in collaboration with the INCLUDE Knowledge Platform, the Netherlands Enterprise Agency, and the Dutch Consulate, this initiative reflects a unique convergence of political will, local ownership, and evidence synthesis.

Over a six-month period, the project successfully delivered revised curricula for the National Diploma in Renewable Energy, Higher National Diplomas in Solar Thermal and Photovoltaic Engineering, and updated National Occupational Standards (NOS) for Solar PV & Backup Systems (Levels 4 and 5).

The curriculum review process was guided by a Technical Working Group (TWG) composed of stakeholders from NBTE, GIZ, and industry partners. The effort included validation workshops, expert consultations, and commissioned research on trainer accreditation and skills gaps.

Victoria Manya, representing INCLUDE, stated:
“For a long time, we’ve been saying that curriculum is a bottleneck for renewable energy to thrive in Nigeria-but now, that inertia is finally coming to an end as the implementation phase begins.”
