Africa stands at the forefront of a global clean energy revolution. With its vast renewable resources, the continent has the potential to lead the world in the production of green hydrogen. Yet, as the energy transition accelerates, ensuring that it is just and inclusive is crucial. Without deliberate action, young people and women risk being left out of emerging opportunities in this rapidly evolving sector.
To help shape an equitable and opportunity-driven transition, INCLUDE is proud to announce the launch of the programme Making Green Hydrogen Work for Africa, supported by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC). The initiative was officially launched in September 2025 during the Global African Hydrogen Summit in Windhoek, Namibia.
Focusing on the green hydrogen transitions in Namibia and South Africa, the programme combines research, strategic foresight, and community engagement to advance youth employment, gender inclusion, and skills development within the emerging GH2 economy. It seeks to ensure that young people are not only beneficiaries but active participants in shaping Africa’s green hydrogen future.
The programme applies an integrated approach through:
-
Strategic Foresight, to explore future skills and employment opportunities;
-
Social Cartography, to map how hydrogen projects affect people and places;
-
Community Engagement, to create inclusive spaces for dialogue and joint solution-building; and
-
Policy Dialogue, to bring policymakers, industry, and civil society together for inclusive action.
By centring social equity, skills, and empowerment, Making Green Hydrogen Work for Africa aims to ensure that the continent’s green hydrogen transition creates skills, jobs, and justice for all.
