- Question of the week
The research group on ‘Ethiopia: Feeder Road Development for Inclusive Productive Employment’ held a kick-off workshop in Ethiopia from 23–26 November 2014. The objective of the workshop was to discuss the project goals and to further elaborate on the detailed activities with the project consortium.
The group discussed the identification of case study areas and visited potential research sites in Tigray. It was agreed to adopt the following criteria for the selection of sites: road age, geography (both lowland and highland), agricultural practices (both farming and pastoralist), distance to towns, and governance of the road building implementation process (Universal Rural Road Access Programme since 2010, or earlier programmes).
The group also talked about innovative opportunities for knowledge sharing, such as http://www.thewaterchannel.tv/, a web-based resource with videos, webinars and thematic pages on water management that also features discussion and debate on road construction and inclusive development in Ethiopia and beyond. The following research themes were identified to organise specific collaborations among research partners: employment generation in road development, employment generation and changes in local economies, and the impact of roads on the natural environment.
